So I took a chance - I bought super cheap Chinese tires for my car, my 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg Edition. Surprisingly, it may be the best "modification" I have ever made to my vehicle.

I usually try to stick to main brands, like Yokohama or Falken or the like. This time I was super short on cash, and desperately needed at least two new rears, so I went to discount tire. If you haven't been to discount tire before, I highly recommend it. Great prices and service, even more so this time.

So the dude helping me came out to my car to "inspect" the tires and "confirm" I indeed did need new tires. Back ones were down almost to the cord on the inside (bent axle), and fronts were getting pretty low. I told him I could only afford two tires at the time, so I only planned on spending a little. We went back inside and he pulled up the tires in question on the computer, Ohtsu FP6000 A/S in 205/55R16. A whopping $52 a piece. At this point I didn't really have a choice, because I had just put camber shims on the rear and knew I needed an alignment anyways, so my budget was getting tight.

The gentlemen, first of all, thanked me for being so patient when I already had an appointment and I had to wait 30 minutes anyway. I smiled and told him it happens, I could see that they were busy. He must have a lot of shitty customers because he stopped and thanked me for understanding multiple times. At this point he told me he knew I was on a budget, so he asked if I could afford 3 tires. I agreed. So I paid for 3 tires, 3 tire replacement certificates, and the install of 2 tires, and drove away with 4 brand new mounted and balanced tires, with replacement certificates for all 4 for right around $200. Now kids, go thank your parents for raising you right.

On to the actual tires. In a word, Damn. Firstly, I've never used directional tires before. In the wet, they are insane (compared to anything I've ever used before), not to mention how good they are in the snow we've been having here in Ohio recently. I usually am able to lose traction in the first three gears in the wet, but I only can in first gear with these. In the dry, things are even better. For $50 tires I just can't recommend them enough. They are hands down the best tires I have ever used on a passenger car, at least for daily use. Hard launches are super easy now and I hardly ever lose traction unless I'm trying. Grip is increased in the turns too, but the sidewalls are a little too soft. Under hard cornering there is a certain breakaway point where you can tell the sidewall is flexing. But again, for daily use on a passenger car like this, I could not recommend anything else remotely in their price range. The treadlife is rated at 35,000, so we'll see. I'm about 6,000 miles in at this point, and I can't see any signs of wear, especially since the tread wells are so deep.

Ohtsu, you have my business.

Discount Tire is the best. I bought my truck with four very bald tires and had to replace them immediately. I shopped online through Discount Tire Direct and ordered 4 Falken Rocky Mountain ATS tires. After rebate they were $73 each which is pretty good for a mid ranged and capable all terrain from a name brand. My friend also ordered the same tires an hour before I did. He got the last 4 in stock. I was notified of this by Discount Tire Direct over the phone. Since I had already paid they were able to offer me Falken Wildpeak AT tires for the same price and keep my certificates. The wildpeaks are the same exact tire but they cost $120 each. I was a happy camper getting all terrain tires for under $300.

Northern Columbus area. These are considered "ultra high performance all-seasons," whatever that means for $50 tires.

They have always been good to me in the past, and continue to do so. I throw as much business at them as I can.

I have saved a crap load of money over the years by not buying the pricier brands. You do often lose something though, be it longevity, handling or noise, but the savings are more than worth it. My 20" Falken all-season performance are quite good all around and do not have the serious noise problems the Falken 453 had. Be careful though; some of the Chinese tires wear very quickly or have very hard rubber that has no grip. They are not worth the savings if you hate driving your car with them.

Im southeast of columbus in the Lancaster area.

It just means there's a "justifiable" reason for shitty tread life ha

The Ohtsu FP6000 = Falken Ziex ZE512, so you got Falkens anyway :)

I think Discount will remount/balance directional tires as part of the free rotations.

I asked them when I purchased them, they said they just do front to back and vise versa on directionals =(
